Another American has died\u2014shot down in the street. A U.S. citizen. An ICU nurse. A helper. A human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I watch the video of what happened to Alex Pretti<\/strong>, what really strikes me isn\u2019t just the senselessness of it \u2014 it\u2019s how ordinary and humane his actions appeared in that moment. Alex wasn\u2019t running toward ICE agents with a weapon. He was holding his phone. He was trying to record what was happening. He was moving to help someone struck down on the pavement by an ICE officer. That much is clear from the footage that\u2019s emerged, and from multiple accounts contradicting official claims that he posed a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happened in Minnesota wasn\u2019t just tragic\u2014it was appalling. Another public execution carried out under the guise of law enforcement, by officers who remain unidentified, poorly trained, and dangerously empowered. And while the headlines will fade, the question that haunts me is this: How did we get here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This isn\u2019t about immigration policy. It\u2019s not about party lines. It\u2019s about human decency. About the kind of nation we are becoming\u2014and the kinds of injustices we\u2019re learning to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As many of you know, I’ve long opposed Trump. I know I\u2019ll be dismissed by some. But this isn\u2019t a Democrat vs. Republican argument. This is a line-in-the-sand moment between right and wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know who many of the MAGA supporters are. I live among them, work with them, break bread with them. And what breaks my heart isn\u2019t just what\u2019s happening\u2014it\u2019s that so many still support it. That even now, after everything we\u2019ve seen, people continue to defend the indefensible. To believe the lies when the video tells a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eight bullets. To the back. Of an unarmed man. Helping a woman. A ICU nurse who served veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History has a rhythm. We\u2019ve seen these patterns before\u2014paramilitary forces, alternate flags, mobs acting with impunity while the state looks the other way, invasion of other sovereign countries. We\u2019ve read about it in textbooks. Now we\u2019re living it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And still, the denial continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We\u2019ve isolated ourselves from our allies with tariffs and withdrawal from world organizations like WHO. Lost credibility on the world stage. We used to be the nation others turned to. Now, we\u2019re the cautionary tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This administration has weaponized fear. It\u2019s normalized violence. It’s using pseudoscience to support public health policies. And in doing so, it\u2019s compromised who we are\u2014economically, diplomatically, and morally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some will say, \u201cBut we needed immigration reform.\u201d I agree. We do. But reform doesn’t mean militarization<\/strong>. It doesn’t mean death<\/strong> in the streets. It doesn\u2019t mean anonymous agents<\/strong> with unchecked power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And to those still supporting this administration\u2014those holding out hope that this is all part of some master plan\u2014I have to ask: Is this really the America you wanted or voted for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If this blog serves any purpose today, it\u2019s to say clearly: I did not vote for this. I do not support this. And I refuse to stay silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019m not na\u00efve. Change won\u2019t come from Democrats. In fact, many of them are as paralyzed by the system as everyone else. Real change\u2014real accountability\u2014has to come from within the MAGA or Trump Republican base. From those willing to say, \u201cThis isn\u2019t what we signed up for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And to the undecided, the disillusioned, the politically disengaged\u2014your silence has consequences. The indecision is the decision. Choosing not to vote, not to engage, is still a choice. And it\u2019s one that carries weight. 90% of the German citizens during the Nazi era were bystanders who said nothing and did nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019m a physician. I understand complexity. I know people make choices they think are best with the information they have. But I also know that leadership matters. That values matter. And that the harm being done right now\u2014especially to our democratic norms and our global standing\u2014will not<\/em> be repairable in our lifetime<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So this is my protest. My stand. My way of saying: Enough. Enough lies. Enough violence. Enough indifference. I stand for life. For dignity. For due process. For the rule of law\u2014not rule by fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We can\u2019t undo the harm already done. But we can decide what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
He didn\u2019t hold a weapon. He held a camera \u2014 and compassion. Rest in power, Alex Pretti.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
If Alex Pretti\u2019s death moved you \u2014 if what\u2019s happening in our country unsettles you \u2014 don\u2019t look away. Don’t let this become just another headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speak up.<\/strong> Share Alex\u2019s story. Share what you feel. Silence, especially now, only helps those who benefit from fear and confusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Demand accountability.<\/strong> Call your representatives. Ask for independent investigations into ICE actions and increased oversight of federal enforcement agencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Stay engaged.<\/strong> Vote. Help others register to vote. Talk to your neighbors, your colleagues \u2014 even those you disagree with. Especially those.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Support human dignity.<\/strong> Donate to legal aid organizations, immigrant rights groups, or local efforts supporting the families affected by unjust enforcement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Remember Alex.<\/strong> Say his name. Remember that he died trying to help. Then ask yourself: what kind of country do we want to be?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
