But it is part of our real life right now\u2014so here\u2019s the \u201cwhy,\u201d straight from our kitchen table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A deliberate pause (and what it taught us)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This past year was a reset. My wife stepped away from Nemours; I left Orlando Health. We pressed pause for family and personal reasons\u2014space to breathe, recalibrate, and ask better questions about how we want to spend our energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We still love medicine. I\u2019m returning to full-time oncology (details to come when I can share them), and my wife continues to practice clinically in a limited way because she enjoys it. Between W-2 income, retirement accounts, and real estate, we had multiple streams\u2014but most still depended on&nbsp;<strong>our<\/strong>&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I use a simple picture: imagine three buckets under different faucets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Employment<\/strong>&nbsp;fills one bucket while you\u2019re physically at the sink.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investments<\/strong>\u2014retirement, mutual funds\u2014flow slowly, for the future you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Real estate<\/strong>&nbsp;can drip or gush depending on the market, and it\u2019s mostly passive once stabilized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A franchise, done right, could become a&nbsp;<strong>fourth faucet<\/strong>\u2014an operating business that doesn\u2019t require either of us at the sink 24\/7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why a franchise (and not a startup from scratch)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Control matters. So does&nbsp;<strong>playbook<\/strong>. We wanted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A proven model we could execute, not invent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear systems, training, and support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The option to evolve toward an&nbsp;<strong>executive ownership<\/strong>&nbsp;model with a&nbsp;<strong>general manager<\/strong>&nbsp;running day-to-day operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We spoke with a&nbsp;<strong>franchise broker<\/strong>&nbsp;(yes, they exist), sat through the slide decks, asked annoying questions, and eliminated anything that looked like swapping one full-time job for another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding a fit we\u2019d actually use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the start, we kept coming back to&nbsp;<strong>4Ever Young<\/strong>\u2014a wellness\/med-spa model focused on helping people feel and look their best as they age. We\u2019re in our mid-40s; lifespan and <em>healthspan<\/em> are front-of-mind. IV hydration after a <em>rough<\/em> night? Peptides? Thoughtful approaches to hormone health under medical oversight? Those are services we might use ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two things clicked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Alignment with our training.<\/strong>&nbsp;Each location needs medical direction. We understand clinical standards and quality, and we care deeply about doing things the right way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal resonance.<\/strong>&nbsp;My wife felt an immediate connection to the mission\u2014there\u2019s a real thread of&nbsp;<strong>women\u2019s empowerment<\/strong>&nbsp;in this space, helping people feel well, confident, and strong as they age.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evolving roles (and staying married through it)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, I was the enthusiastic one\u2014running the numbers, thinking about legal, financing, and structure. Over time, it flipped. My wife became the CEO of this venture\u2014the person steering the ship, hiring, building the team, nurturing vendors and client relationships, and holding the standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the lesson:&nbsp;<strong>one captain<\/strong>. Division of labor isn\u2019t just practical; it prevents chaos. I\u2019m the back-office partner (finance\/legal\/ops). She\u2019s the operator and culture-setter.  She&#8217;s the CEO and I&#8217;m the CFO&#8230; I think that&#8217;s how it works? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diversification and legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re building more than income. We want our kids to see what responsible risk and disciplined work look like. We set clear expectations at home: character, education, accountability. If they meet those standards, we hope to hand them&nbsp;<strong>operating assets<\/strong>, not just stories. Multiple well-run locations, even in different concepts that complement each other, can create a durable foundation for them to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we\u2019re&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;doing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not leaving medicine. I plan to be a full-time oncologist and take on leadership responsibilities. The franchise is&nbsp;<strong>in addition to<\/strong>, not&nbsp;<strong>instead of<\/strong>, medicine\u2014a way to diversify and express another part of who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The honest part: risk and effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not romanticize this. There\u2019s capital at risk. There\u2019s early sweat equity. There\u2019s hiring, training, compliance, marketing, and the humbling reality that every \u201csystem\u201d is powered by people. Our bet is that the upfront push leads to a stable, manager-run operation that doesn\u2019t demand our presence to function\u2014<strong>a real fourth faucet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll share the nuts and bolts in future posts: diligence, Discovery Day, pro forma modeling, territory selection, buildout, hiring, opening playbooks, KPIs, and the first 90 days. For now, this is our \u201cwhy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re excited. We\u2019re grounded.
